From 20-24 March 2010 the Stellenbosch Konservatorium of Music will be hosting it's 3rd International Piano Symposium. This unique experience brings together the best of local and international pianists.

for 5 days of master classes, lectures and concerts. International artists Vadim Monastyrsky from the Tel Aviv University, Israel, and Lori Sims of Western Michigan University USA join a host of pianists from across the country who form the faculty for this year.

These include:

Liezl-Maret Jacobs (KwaZulu Natal University), Joseph Standford, Ruth Goveia and Wessel van Wyk (Pretoria University), Albie van Schalkwyk, Franklin Larey and Francois du Toit (University of Cape Town), Catherine Foxcroft (Rhodes University), Truida vdWalt, Bernada Swart (NorthWest University), Malcolm Nay (WITS), Luis Magalhaes, Bennie van Eeden, Simone Kirsch and Nina Schumann (Stellenbosch University).

The format of the symposium allows piano students and teachers the chance to take part in master classes with a faculty member of their choice. The programme for the five days consists of morning lectures, two hour master classes, lunch hour concerts by young artists and faculty evening concerts.

Although entrance to participate has closed, the symposium is open to all who would like to observe the classes and concerts, with full week and single day passes being offered for this. Tickets for the evening concerts are available through Computicket. All the concerts are going to be special - but one in particular is worth extra notice. On Tuesday 23rd March the faculty concert will feature works for 2 and 4 hands, 2 pianos, 4 pianos, 6 pianos and finishing with a finale -not to be missed- of 10 pianos in a performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. This concert will celebrate the recent purchase of 20 pianos from Yamaha for the department of music, 8 of which will be on stage that night.

08 March 2008 - General Warning on Unqualified Piano Tuners in South Africa

There are a few unqualified individuals operating in the country, and some even claim to be affiliated to the SAAPPT - often responsible for damage and creating more work due to their lack of knowledge and skills. Piano owners would be wise to beware the stranger bearing a tuning fork and an ingratiating smile. Keep in mind that qualified piano technicians receive proper training as they work with delicate, hugely expensive equipment which often has sentimental value. Members of the South African Association of Professional Piano Tuners carry an id card with an expiry date, stating their membership.
